SYKESVILLE: Excitement is building in Sykesville as the community prepares to host the 46th annual "Run/Walk for Someone Special," a heartwarming event that brings people together to support The Arc of Jefferson and Clearfield Counties. Scheduled for Sunday, April 13, at Sykesville Town Hall, the event welcomes participants, sponsors, and spectators, all coming together to make a difference in the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Registration kicks off at 1:30 p.m., with the run beginning at 3 p.m. Participants can choose their challenge—a two-mile run or walk or a more demanding five-mile run. To ensure that everyone can take part, the event includes a special "stroll and roll lane" designed for those using strollers, walkers, or wheelchairs.
The Run/Walk is one of the biggest fundraisers for The Arc of Jefferson and Clearfield Counties, a nonprofit committed to advocating for and supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through its summer camps, social activities, and respite services, The Arc helps create opportunities for growth, connection, and fun.
Businesses or individuals looking to give back can do so by becoming event sponsors. With a donation of at least $500 by March 10, sponsors will have their logos featured on the back of the event T-shirts, which are given to more than 800 participants. Those interested can reach out to Carla Ferko, Executive Director of The Arc, at 814-952-2467.
In addition to the main event, attendees can enjoy a variety of activities, including raffle prizes, a barbecue raffle, and a 50/50 cash drawing. If the weather cooperates, kids can look forward to a special activity table with face painting, adding to the festive and family-friendly atmosphere.
The money raised will go directly toward funding The Arc’s four free summer camps, which take place in DuBois, Punxsutawney, Brookville, and a specialized Autism camp. These camps are designed for individuals with more complex disabilities and offer incredible experiences, from magic shows and visits to the Carnegie Science Center to interactive sessions with artists, musicians, and therapy animals.
Beyond the summer programs, The Arc also runs recreation and respite clubs in DuBois and Punxsutawney. Open to adults over 18 with intellectual or developmental disabilities, these clubs offer fun and engaging activities such as cooking classes, crafts, movie nights, and live music performances.
Over the years, the Run/Walk has grown into a beloved tradition, with more than 600 participants joining in previous editions. Last year, the event raised an impressive $70,000 for The Arc’s programs. Participants are always welcomed at the finish line with cheers and encouragement, and top finishers in each age group take home trophies and ribbons. This year, local schools including DuBois Central Catholic, DuBois Christian Schools, Punxsutawney Christian School, and Ss. Cosmas & Damian Catholic School and Parish are all expected to take part, making it a true community affair.
No great event is complete without great food, and this one is no exception. Attendees can look forward to a delicious meal featuring the legendary hotdog sauce from Frank’s Star Lunch in Punxsutawney—a favorite for many locals who have missed its signature flavor.
The Arc is always looking for volunteers to help with its many programs and events. Anyone interested in lending a hand is encouraged to reach out to the organization.
For those planning to participate, pre-registration is open until midnight on April 11. To sign up, make a donation, or learn more about the event, visit www.jcarc.org. Additional updates can be found on The Arc’s official Facebook page at www.facebook.com/thearcofjefferson/. Donations can also be mailed to The Arc, PO Box 236, Punxsutawney, PA 15767.
For over four decades, the Run/Walk for Someone Special has been more than just a race—it’s a celebration of inclusivity, generosity, and community spirit. Whether running, walking, volunteering, or cheering from the sidelines, everyone has a chance to be part of something truly special and help make a lasting impact.
