SMETHPORT: Milestones don’t always come in wins, but they still matter.
Union/A-C Valley senior Maddy Dehart etched her name into the program’s history books on Wednesday night, becoming the first player in the girls basketball co-op’s history to score 1,000 career points, doing so in a hard-fought 56–50 loss to Smethport.
Dehart entered the night needing 19 points to reach the mark and finished with 22 points, 14 rebounds, and four steals, reaching the milestone midway through the third quarter on a putback after an offensive rebound — a fitting moment for a player known for effort and toughness.
Now in her third season with the Union/A-C Valley co-op after spending one year at A-C Valley, Dehart becomes just the sixth player overall in the combined program to surpass 1,000 points and the first since Ellie Thompson’s 1,527-point career ended in 2018.
The game itself was tightly contested from start to finish. Smethport carried a slim 28–25 lead into halftime, but Union/A-C Valley responded to take a 42–41 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
That’s when Smethport surged.
Madey McKean took control late, scoring eight of her 26 points in the final frame while filling the stat sheet with eight rebounds, five assists, eight steals, and three blocks to help the Lady Hubbers pull away down the stretch.
Payton Neff also played a major role for Smethport, adding 19 points, 11 rebounds, and four steals in a strong all-around performance.
Despite the loss, the night belonged to Dehart — a milestone built over years of consistency, leadership, and physical play that reflects the heart of the Union/A-C Valley program.
Sometimes history happens even when the scoreboard doesn’t cooperate.
