KERSEY: In a powerful gesture of community support and social responsibility, Shoe Sensation has launched a sock drive to benefit the Guardian Angel Center, a local nonprofit organization in Kersey devoted to helping children in need. The initiative, which began on April 1 and will continue through the end of the year, encourages community members to donate brand-new socks—still in their original packaging—for school-aged children from kindergarten through 12th grade.

The Guardian Angel Center, a well-regarded charitable outreach program, works to provide essential clothing to families facing financial hardship. According to Shoe Sensation Market Sales Director David Bateman, socks represent one of the organization’s most pressing expenses.
“The mission of the Guardian Angel Center is to supplement the clothing needs of children whose families struggle financially,” Bateman said. “One of their major goals is to minimize the social stigma associated with clothing insecurity—especially for school-age children who may otherwise feel isolated or embarrassed by their circumstances.”
In the 2023–2024 school year alone, the Guardian Angel Center served families from six different counties across the Tri-County region and beyond, reflecting the wide-reaching need for such a service. As students return to school each year, having access to basic items like socks can play a surprisingly large role in helping children feel confident, comfortable, and included.
The community is encouraged to participate in the drive by donating at any Shoe Sensation store located in St. Marys, DuBois, Clearfield, or Punxsutawney during regular store hours. These locations have prominently placed donation bins to make drop-offs easy and convenient.
Though socks might seem like a small donation, Bateman emphasized their larger impact.
“These are items that many of us take for granted, but for children facing hardship, a new pair of socks can offer dignity, comfort, and warmth,” he said. “It’s a small act with a big effect.”
The long duration of the sock drive offers a unique opportunity for sustained community engagement. Rather than a short-term push, Shoe Sensation hopes this ongoing effort will allow more individuals, schools, and local organizations to participate throughout the year. The extended timeline also ensures that the Guardian Angel Center can replenish its inventory as new needs arise with changing seasons and school schedules.
The next time you're out shopping, Bateman encourages you to consider adding a few pairs of socks to your list.
“It’s an easy way to give back, and it means so much,” he said. “Just drop them in the box at your local Shoe Sensation store, and know that you're helping a child in your own community.”
In a time when local partnerships between businesses and nonprofits are increasingly vital, this sock drive highlights the strength of collaboration—and the importance of supporting the youngest and most vulnerable members of our communities.
