CLEARFIELD: The Clearfield County SPCA will host a low-cost Cat Spay & Neuter Clinic on Friday, February 20, giving local pet owners an affordable opportunity to protect their cats’ health while helping address pet overpopulation in the region.
The Clearfield County SPCA is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to providing a safe haven for any and all unwanted or homeless animals throughout Clearfield County and surrounding areas. Spay and neuter clinics are a cornerstone of that mission, helping reduce the number of animals entering shelters while improving the quality of life for pets already in homes.
Health Benefits Backed By Veterinary Science
Spaying and neutering cats offers a range of well-documented medical and behavioral benefits, many of which are supported by decades of veterinary research.
For female cats, spaying eliminates the risk of uterine infections and dramatically reduces the likelihood of mammary (breast) cancer, which is malignant in the vast majority of cats. When performed before the first heat cycle, spaying provides the strongest protective effect. It also prevents ovarian and uterine cancers entirely.
Male cats benefit by avoiding testicular cancer and significantly lowering the risk of prostate-related diseases. Neutering also reduces hormone-driven behaviors such as roaming, spraying, and fighting — activities that increase the risk of injuries, abscesses, and transmission of diseases like Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV).
Veterinary professionals also note that fixed cats tend to live longer, healthier lives, largely because they are less likely to roam, fight, or engage in high-risk behaviors.
Behavioral And Community Benefits
In addition to health advantages, spaying and neutering often leads to calmer, more predictable behavior. Neutered male cats are far less likely to spray urine to mark territory, and spayed females no longer go into heat — eliminating loud vocalizations, restlessness, and escape attempts.
On a community level, spay and neuter programs are one of the most effective tools for reducing stray and feral cat populations, easing the burden on shelters, rescues, and municipal animal control systems. Fewer unwanted litters mean fewer animals facing neglect, abandonment, or euthanasia.
