DUBOIS: In a historic step toward unifying law enforcement in the area, Sandy Township Police Chief Kris Kruzelak was officially sworn in as the DuBois police chief during Wednesday’s joint consolidation board meeting. Kruzelak will lead both departments through the end of 2025 as the two municipalities prepare for their full merger, set to take effect in January 2026.

The swearing-in ceremony, conducted by DuBois Magisterial District Judge David Meholick, was attended by Kruzelak’s family, friends, and officers from both the city and township police forces. With his hand raised, Kruzelak took the solemn oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution, the laws of Pennsylvania, and the ordinances of the City of DuBois, pledging to enforce the law with fairness and integrity, free from discrimination of any kind.

Expressing gratitude for the trust placed in him, Kruzelak addressed the community through the Courier Express. “I want to sincerely thank DuBois City Council for their confidence in appointing me as police chief. It is an honor I take very seriously, and I appreciate the opportunity to serve both municipalities in this role,” he said.

Kruzelak also praised the collaboration that has gone into the consolidation effort. “Working alongside Sgt. Shawn McCleary and Assistant Chief Dustin Roy over the past year has been invaluable in preparing for this transition. We’ve made significant progress, and I am incredibly proud of the dedication and hard work put forth by both departments’ command staff.”

Reflecting on his 30-year career with the Sandy Township Police Department, Kruzelak acknowledged the many officers, past and present, who have shaped his approach to law enforcement. Looking ahead, he expressed enthusiasm for the future. “The officers of both the DuBois City Police and Sandy Township Police bring extensive training and specialized skills that will ensure top-tier service for our community. I have no doubt that once fully merged, our department will be one of the finest, built on professionalism, trust, and integrity.”

The path to this moment was paved by a unanimous 9-0 vote during the January 15 meeting, when the consolidation board authorized the interim management team to offer Kruzelak the position. The employment agreement, effective through the end of 2025, aligns with the budgeted salary and marks a crucial milestone in bringing the two departments together. The decision had the full support of former interim DuBois Police Chief McCleary and Assistant Police Chief Roy, as well as township Supervisors Barry Abbott and Bill Beers, who formally made and seconded the motion.

Kruzelak has led the Sandy Township Police Department since July 1, 2019, stepping up as officer-in-charge after Chief Don Routch’s retirement in 2018. Now, as he prepares to guide both departments into a new era, he remains committed to ensuring a smooth and successful transition for the officers and the community they serve.
